Athens – Delphi – Meteora – Athens: 4-Day Tour

Day 1: Athens – Hosios Loukas – Delphi
Our driver picks you up from your hotel in Athens or from the airport and you head north-west through Boeotia. On the way you can stop at the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its 11th-century mosaics. In the afternoon you reach Delphi (about 2.5 hours from Athens without stops), the “navel of the world” for the ancient Greeks. Visit the Sanctuary of Apollo, the theatre, the stadium and the museum with the bronze Charioteer. Overnight in Delphi or in the mountain village of Arachova.

Day 2: Delphi – Meteora
In the morning, enjoy the view over the sea of olive trees that runs from Delphi down to the Gulf of Corinth, then continue north through the plain of Thessaly to Kalambaka (about 3.5 hours). In the late afternoon, watch the sunset from the rocks of Meteora, when the monasteries on top of the sandstone pillars glow in the evening light. Overnight in Kalambaka or Kastraki, at the foot of the rocks.

Day 3: The monasteries of Meteora
A whole day for Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Six monasteries are still active today; you visit some of them – such as Great Meteoron, Varlaam or Roussanou, depending on their opening days – and the hermit caves where the first monks lived before the monasteries were built. Inside the monasteries shoulders and knees must be covered, and women are asked to wear a long skirt (wraps are usually available at the entrance). Free afternoon and second night in Kalambaka.

Day 4: Meteora – Thermopylae – Athens
On the way back to Athens (about 4 hours), stop at Thermopylae, where Leonidas and his 300 Spartans fought the Persian army in 480 BC, and see the monument and the visitor centre. Arrival at your hotel in Athens or drop-off at the airport in the late afternoon.
