Season by season

Spring (March – May)

Green hills, wild flowers and Easter, the biggest celebration of the Greek year. Ideal for ancient sites and for hiking – the gorges have water and the paths are lush. The sea is still cool for swimming until late May; snow can remain on the high peaks until May.

Try: the Menalon Trail, the Neda Gorge, Archaeological Peloponnese.

Summer (June – August)

Long, sunny days and a warm sea. July and August are hot in the lowlands (often above 30 °C), so plan sightseeing for the morning and the beach for the afternoon. The mountains are the best escape: Arcadia, Pelion, Epirus and Olympus are pleasantly cooler. Mid-August (around the 15th) is the busiest time of the year.

Try: Beaches of the Peloponnese, diving & snorkelling, Mount Olympus.

Autumn (September – November)

Our favourite season. The sea stays warm until October, the summer crowds are gone and the forests of Arcadia, Pelion and Epirus turn gold and red. Perfect for hiking, wine and harvest season, and sightseeing in comfortable temperatures. Rain becomes more frequent in November.

Try: the Vikos Gorge, Pelion trails, Ancient sites & beaches.

Winter (December – February)

The quiet season. Athens and the coast stay mild (around 12–14 °C), while the mountain villages get snow – stone houses, fireplaces and hearty local food. Archaeological sites and museums stay open with shorter hours. Some coastal hotels and tavernas close for the winter.

Try: Stemnitsa, Delphi day trip, Meteora day trip.

Good to know

  • Easter is the most important Greek holiday, with candlelit processions on Good Friday and celebrations on Sunday. It is a wonderful time to visit a village – book early. See our events calendar.
  • Mid-August (the Assumption on 15 August) is when Greeks themselves are on holiday: beaches, ferries and hotels are at their busiest.
  • Mountain refuges: the main refuge on Mount Olympus (Spilios Agapitos) is open from May to October; outside this season the high mountains are for experienced, well-equipped hikers only.
  • Heat: in July and August, start walks and site visits early in the morning and carry water.
  • Getting around: whatever the season, our private transfers take you door to door – from the airport, the port or your hotel – with a local driver who knows the roads in every weather.
