Pelion Trails – Cobbled Paths between Mountain and Sea

Mount Pelion, the green mountain of the Centaurs above Volos, is crossed by a network of old cobbled mule paths – the kalderimia – that once linked its villages with each other and with the sea. Walking them takes you through chestnut and plane forests, past stone mansions and springs, and down to little Aegean coves. Most walks are short and easy to combine into a few days of village-to-village hiking.

The routes
Portaria – the Centaurs' Path. A short, shady path from Portaria that climbs gently along a stream, crossing seven little wooden bridges under plane trees – an easy hour that children love.
Tsagarada to Damouchari. From the green village of Tsagarada, an old kalderimi passes the viewpoint of Agnanti and descends steeply – "almost a ladder" of cobbled steps – to the tiny harbour of Damouchari. It can be extended to Agios Ioannis via Papa Nero beach.
Agriolefkes to Makryrrachi. A longer forest walk past the Hania waterfall, waymarked in red by the Volos mountaineering club in 2019 – about 9 km and 4½–5 hours.
Village to village. The paths can be linked into a multi-day walk, for example: a loop to Makrinitsa from Portaria (about 13 km), Portaria to Hania (about 7 km), Hania down to Agios Ioannis via Kissos (about 11 km), and Agios Ioannis to Tsagarada via Damouchari (about 8 km).
