The Mani, the wild middle peninsula of the southern Peloponnese, is a land of stone tower villages, Byzantine chapels and old mule paths between the mountains of Taygetos and the sea. Two walks show its two faces: the green, gorge-cut paths around Kardamyli in the Messinian Mani, and the bare, wind-swept trail to the lighthouse of Cape Tainaro at the very tip of mainland Greece.

Kardamyli and the Viros Gorge

Around Kardamyli, a network of 12 waymarked paths links the village with the hamlets on the slopes of Taygetos – Old Kardamyli, Petrovouni, Agia Sofia, Exochori and Saidona – and with the Viros Gorge, which cuts down from the mountain to the sea. Short walks take about an hour, for example from Kardamyli up to Petrovouni through Old Kardamyli; longer ones lead past old monasteries to the gorge.

A classic day is the loop from Kardamyli into the Viros Gorge, up to Exochori – the village where the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor's ashes were scattered nearby – and back through Agia Sofia: about 11.4 km and 5–6 hours of walking. Most paths are linear between villages, so we can arrange a pick-up at the end.

Cape Tainaro lighthouse

At the end of the road south of Areopoli, from the little Byzantine church of Agioi Asomatoi – built partly with stones from the ancient Temple of Poseidon – a path runs along the coast to the lighthouse at the southern tip of mainland Greece. On the way you pass the remains of ancient Tainaron and a Roman mosaic floor, and the cave that the ancients believed was a gate to the Underworld. About 40–50 minutes each way.

Highlights

  • Stone tower houses and Byzantine chapels – Old Kardamyli, Areopoli and the tower village of Vathia.
  • The church of Agia Sofia and the old monasteries of Lykakio and Sotiros above Kardamyli.
  • The Viros Gorge, between Taygetos and the sea.
  • Cape Tainaro: the lighthouse, the Roman mosaic and the "gate to the Underworld" at the southernmost point of mainland Greece.
  • Swims in the coves of Kardamyli and the Mani after the walk.

Safety tips

  • There is little shade and no water on most paths – carry plenty of water, sun hat and sunscreen.
  • Avoid midday walking in summer; start early.
  • Do not enter the Viros Gorge after heavy rain or in winter, when the stream can turn into a torrent.
  • Wear proper hiking shoes – the paths are rocky and uneven.
