In the stone villages of Zagori, in the mountains of Epirus, the Vikos Gorge is one of the great walks of Europe – a deep limestone canyon listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest in the world in proportion to its width. The classic hike follows its floor from Monodendri down to the Voidomatis springs and up to the village of Vikos or to Papigo, through the heart of the Vikos–Aoos National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark.

The route

Monodendri to the gorge floor. The path starts by the church of Agios Athanasios in Monodendri and descends on stone steps into the gorge. Near the start, a short detour leads to the cliff-edge monastery of Agia Paraskevi.

Along the gorge. The waymarked O3 trail follows the dry riverbed and the forested banks for several hours, between walls that rise almost a kilometre above you.

Voidomatis springs and the climb out. At the springs of the Voidomatis, the river suddenly appears from the rock in clear blue-green pools. From here the path climbs to the village of Vikos – or, on the longer variant, to the Papigo villages under the towers of Astraka.

  • Avoid the gorge after heavy rain or in winter conditions, and check the forecast before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I walk only part of the gorge?

Yes. A shorter option is to walk down from Monodendri to the gorge floor and back, or to visit the Voidomatis springs from Vikos village. We can suggest the right section for you.

Do I need a guide?

The trail is waymarked, but it is long and remote. If you are not used to long mountain hikes, we recommend a local guide.

When is the best time?

Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons, with mild temperatures and beautiful colours. Avoid winter days with snow or heavy rain.

How do I get there?

The nearest airport is Ioannina, about an hour from Monodendri. From Athens the drive takes about 4½–5 hours. We arrange your transfers and the pick-up at the end of the hike.
