Snowy rooftops and church dome of Agios Petros village, Arcadia

Christmas and New Year in the Arcadian Mountain Villages

When the first snow falls on Mount Mainalo, the stone villages of Arcadia become one of the most magical winter escapes in Greece – and they are only about three hours from Athens. Fireplaces, the smell of roasted chestnuts, church bells over the gorges and slow mountain cooking: this is Christmas the way Greeks remember it from their grandparents’ villages. We live here, in Lagkadia, and this is our favourite time of the year.

Where to stay

  • Dimitsana – a stone village on the edge of the Lousios gorge, with lanes, mansions and the open-air Water Power Museum.
  • Stemnitsa – the village of silversmiths, quiet and authentic, with views over the mountains.
  • Vytina – surrounded by fir forests, close to the Mainalo ski centre and full of life at Christmas.
  • Levidi and Lagkadia – smaller villages with traditional guesthouses and a real local feel.

See our partner hotels and guesthouses – many have fireplaces and rooms with mountain views.

Snow and skiing on Mainalo

The Mainalo ski centre at Ostrakina, near Vytina, is one of the oldest ski areas in Greece and one of the closest to Athens. Between 1,550 and 1,770 metres it has eight pistes for beginners and intermediate skiers, plus a snow park – ideal for families. When there is snow, a day on the slopes and an evening by the fire make the perfect winter day.

Christmas traditions

  • Kalanda – on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, children go from house to house singing carols with triangles.
  • Christmas morning – the liturgy in the village church, followed by a family table that lasts for hours.
  • Vasilopita – on New Year’s Day every family cuts the St Basil’s cake; whoever finds the hidden coin has luck for the year.
  • Epiphany (6 January) – the blessing of the waters closes the festive season.

What to eat

Winter food in Arcadia is generous: slow-cooked pork and lamb, handmade pasta (hilopites), pies with greens from the mountains, roasted chestnuts, fir honey from Menalon and the festive sweets, melomakarona and kourabiedes. Pair it with a red wine from the Peloponnese by the fire. Read more in our Arcadia food guide.

Winter walks

On clear winter days the lower paths of the Lousios gorge and the forests around the villages are wonderful for walking. Sections of the Menalon Trail can be walked in winter depending on the weather – a local guide is available on request. Getting there safely in winter

The mountain roads to the villages can have snow and ice in winter. With a private transfer from Athens or the airport, an experienced local driver brings you door to door to your guesthouse – no snow chains, no stress, and you can enjoy the Christmas wine at dinner.

Frequently asked questions

Is there always snow at Christmas?

Not always – snow depends on the year, and it is more likely from late December to February. The villages are beautiful with or without it.

Are hotels and tavernas open over Christmas?

Yes – Christmas and New Year are high season in the mountain villages, and many places fill up early. Book as soon as you know your dates.

Can we come for New Year’s Eve only?

Of course. Two or three nights around New Year are enough to enjoy the villages, the food and a winter walk.
