Zagori in 3 Days: Vikos Gorge, Stone Bridges & Papigo

In the mountains of Epirus, the stone villages of Zagori sit above one of the great natural wonders of Europe: the Vikos Gorge, part of the Vikos–Aoos National Park and UNESCO Global Geopark. This private 3-day trip takes you from Athens or Ioannina to the viewpoints, the arched stone bridges and the villages of Papigo, with the option to hike the gorge itself.

Day 1: Athens – Ioannina – Zagori
Pick-up in Athens (about 4½ hours) or at Ioannina airport. A walk by the lake of Ioannina, then up to the villages of central Zagori and check in at a stone guesthouse.

Day 2: The Vikos Gorge
Morning at the Oxya or Beloi viewpoints for the classic view into the gorge. Hikers can walk the gorge from Monodendri to the village of Vikos (about 10 km, 6 hours) while your driver waits at the end. Others visit the stone bridges of Kokkori and Kalogeriko (Plakida) and the villages of Kipi and Koukouli.

Day 3: Papigo and the Voidomatis springs – return
Drive to Mikro and Megalo Papigo below the towers of Mount Astraka and walk to the clear Voidomatis springs, then return to Ioannina airport or Athens.
