Skiing in the Peloponnese: Mainalo vs Kalavryta
Few visitors expect snow in the Peloponnese, yet two ski centres sit only about two and a half to three hours from Athens: Mainalo, above the fir-forest village of Vytina in Arcadia, and Kalavryta, on Mount Helmos in the north of the peninsula. Both are small and friendly compared with the Alps, and both can be combined with stone villages, monasteries and a warm meal by the fire.
Mainalo Ski Centre (Ostrakina)
The Mainalo Ski Centre at Ostrakina is one of the oldest ski areas in Greece and the closest to Athens. It lies between 1,550 and 1,770 metres and has eight pistes – about 5.5 km in total – for beginners, intermediate and experienced skiers, served by four lifts. There is also a snowboard park. In the season it usually operates daily from about 09:00 to 16:00.
The centre is about 15 km, or around 30 minutes, from Vytina. That makes it ideal for families, beginners and anyone who wants a few hours on the snow as part of a weekend in the mountain villages of Arcadia.
Kalavryta Ski Centre (Mount Helmos)
Kalavryta Ski Centre is on the north-west side of Mount Helmos, about 15 km above the town of Kalavryta. It is the larger of the two, with 12 runs and about 20 km of pistes served by 7 lifts, two lodges with cafés and restaurants, and a view of the Gulf of Corinth from the upper station. Equipment is usually cheaper to rent in Kalavryta town than at the slopes.
Kalavryta suits intermediate and advanced skiers who want more variety, and it combines perfectly with the famous rack railway through the Vouraikos gorge, the monastery of Mega Spileo and the Cave of the Lakes.

When is the ski season?
The season usually runs from December to March, but it depends entirely on the snow – the centres open only when there is enough of it, and conditions change from day to day. We always check with you the day before and can move the date if needed. For a smaller snow day further north, Pelion also has a little ski centre at Agriolefkes above Hania.
Getting there without snow chains
The mountain roads to both ski centres can have snow and ice, and there are no convenient buses. With a private transfer an experienced local driver picks you up in Athens, at the airport or at your hotel in Arcadia, takes you to the slopes and brings you back – no snow chains, no icy hairpins, and you can enjoy a glass of wine at dinner.
