Explore Mount Pelion
Mount Pelion rises right above Volos, with stone villages hidden in chestnut and plane forests and beaches on both the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean. Old cobbled paths (kalderimia) link villages such as Makrinitsa, Portaria, Tsagarada and Milies, and the little steam train still runs from Ano Lechonia to Milies in the warm months.

Portaria is on the western slopes of Pelion, about 14 km from Volos and roughly 3 h 30 by car from Athens. Buses from Athens go only as far as Volos, with few connections up to the villages, so the easiest way is a private transfer from Athens or Athens airport straight to your hotel.
