Clean Monday in Galaxidi and Delphi with Kids: 3 Days

Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera) is the first day of Lent and one of the happiest holidays for Greek families: picnics, kites in the sky and, in the seaside town of Galaxidi, the famous flour war (alevromoutzouroma), when the harbour turns into a cloud of coloured flour. In 2027 it falls on Monday 15 March, so Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March is a long weekend. This private 3-day trip adds a visit to Delphi on the way.

Day 1 (Saturday): Athens – Delphi – Galaxidi
Pick-up in Athens in a private car or minivan with child seats. Visit the sanctuary of Apollo and the museum at Delphi, with stories of the oracle that children love, then continue down to Galaxidi on the sea (about 30 minutes) for the night.

Day 2 (Sunday): Galaxidi, Itea – or the Patras Carnival
A relaxed day in Galaxidi: the old captains’ houses, the harbour and the pine-covered peninsula, and a drive through the great olive grove of Amfissa to Itea. If you want even more carnival, your driver can take you over the Rio–Antirrio bridge to the Grand Parade of the Patras Carnival (Sunday 14 March 2027).

Day 3 (Clean Monday): the flour war – Athens
The flour war at the harbour of Galaxidi, kite flying and the traditional Clean Monday meal with lagana bread and seafood, then the drive back to Athens in the afternoon.

Wear old clothes and bring goggles or sunglasses for the flour war; families with small children can watch from a quieter corner of the harbour. Traffic back to Athens is heavy on Clean Monday evening, so we plan the departure time with you. We reply within 24 hours.
