Discover Thrace in 4 Days: Kavala, Xanthi, the Nestos Gorge & the Evros

About this Tour

Thrace, in the far north-east of Greece, is one of the least-known corners of the country: old towns with tobacco mansions, the green gorge of the Nestos river, wetlands full of birds, the Rhodope mountains and a mix of cultures you will not find anywhere else in Greece. This private trip starts from Thessaloniki or Kavala airport and ends in Alexandroupoli, with your own driver all the way.

Day 1: Thessaloniki or Kavala – Kavala old town – Xanthi
Pick-up at the airport or your hotel. Stop in Kavala to walk the old town of Panagia above the harbour and see the Kamares aqueduct, then continue to Xanthi and check in.

Day 2: Xanthi old town, the Nestos gorge and the Pomak villages
Morning in the old town of Xanthi, with its cobbled lanes, mansions and Balkan architecture. Then the Nestos river valley, where the river winds between steep mountains – walk the riverbank path, or canoe or kayak on request. In the afternoon, a drive into the Rhodope foothills to the villages of the Pomaks, a Muslim community of herders and tobacco growers.

Day 3: Lake Vistonida, Maroneia, Komotini – Alexandroupoli
The little church of Agios Nikolaos on its islet in Lake Vistonida at Porto Lagos, a wetland with more than 300 bird species. The ancient city of Maroneia with its theatre and city walls, and the scenic coastal road to Mesimvria. The bazaar of Komotini for roasted chickpeas and local sweets, then on to Alexandroupoli and its lighthouse.

Day 4: Dadia Forest or the Evros Delta – Alexandroupoli
Choose the Dadia Forest, a WWF-protected reserve and the last refuge of the black vulture in the Balkans, or a small-boat trip in the Evros Delta, home to more than 300 bird species. Transfer to Alexandroupoli airport, or back to Thessaloniki.

Every day can be adapted, and the trip can be extended to Samothrace or combined with Halkidiki or Mount Olympus. Tell us your dates and we will reply within 24 hours.
