The Lousios Gorge and Its Monasteries: A Visitor's Guide
The Lousios Gorge in western Arcadia is one of the most beautiful and spiritual places in the Peloponnese. For about 15 km the river Lousios cuts a deep, forested gorge between Dimitsana and Stemnitsa, and on its steep cliffs stand so many monasteries that it is called the “Mount Athos of the Peloponnese”. Here is how to explore it.
The river and the gorge
The gorge is around 15 km long from north to south and about 2 km wide, with steep cliffs and dense forest. According to tradition, the newborn Zeus was bathed at the river’s sources, which gave the Lousios its name (from the Greek word for “bathing”). The ancient traveller Pausanias called it the coldest river in the known world.
The monasteries
- Prodromou Monastery – built into the rock face high above the river, one of the most impressive sights in Greece.
- Old and New Philosophou Monasteries – the old monastery dates back to 963 and the new one to 1691.
- Aimyalon Monastery and Panagia Kalamiou – further monasteries in and around the gorge.
Remember that the monasteries are active places of worship: cover shoulders and knees, keep quiet, and check visiting hours locally.
Ancient Gortys
At the southern end of the gorge lie the remains of ancient Gortys, with a sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of healing, and the church of St. Andrew. It is a peaceful, little-visited site by the river.
Water power and gunpowder
The fast water of the Lousios once drove dozens of mills. During the War of Independence of 1821, the gunpowder mills of Dimitsana supplied the Greek fighters. Near Dimitsana, the Open-Air Water Power Museum shows how the river powered a flour mill, a tannery and a gunpowder mill.
Hiking the gorge
The best way to experience the Lousios is on foot. Section 1 of the Menalon Trail runs from Stemnitsa to Dimitsana through the gorge – about 12.5 km and 5 hours, passing Prodromou and the Philosophou monasteries. It is rated difficult (4/5), so good shoes and some hiking experience are needed.
