The tower village of Vathia in the Mani

The Mani Peninsula: Tower Villages, Caves and Wild Coast – A Travel Guide

The Mani is the middle finger of the Peloponnese: a rugged peninsula of stone tower houses, tiny Byzantine churches, olive terraces and a wild coastline that ends at Cape Tainaron, the southernmost point of mainland Greece. It is one of the most atmospheric places in the country – and best explored slowly.

Outer Mani: Kardamyli and Stoupa

South of Kalamata, under the Taygetos mountains, the Outer Mani has green hills and pretty seaside villages. Kardamyli, with its old stone quarter and pebble beaches, was the home of the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor. Stoupa has one of the best sandy beaches of the area. Walking paths lead up into the gorges and old villages above the coast.

Areopoli and Limeni

Areopoli is the capital of the Mani, with stone lanes, tower houses and a proud history in the War of Independence of 1821. Just below it, the little harbour of Limeni has turquoise water and fish tavernas by the sea.

The Diros caves

A few kilometres south of Areopoli, at Diros bay, the Vlychada cave is visited by boat: a quiet ride of about 45 minutes through underground lakes and forests of stalactites, followed by a short walk. In summer, come early to avoid queues.

Deep Mani: Vathia and Cape Tainaron

Further south the landscape becomes dry and dramatic. Vathia, a village of tall stone towers on a hill, is one of the iconic images of the Mani. At the end of the road, a walk of about half an hour leads to the lighthouse of Cape Tainaron – in myth, one of the gates to the underworld.

Gythio

On the east side, Gythio is a colourful harbour town with seafood tavernas and the islet of Kranai, linked by a causeway. Long sandy beaches stretch south of the town.

How many days?

Allow at least two or three nights: one base in the Outer Mani (Kardamyli or Stoupa) and one in Areopoli or Limeni lets you see the whole peninsula without rushing.

Getting there

Kalamata is about 3 hours from Athens, and Areopoli about 4 hours. Buses inside the Mani are rare, and the roads are narrow and winding – a private driver lets you enjoy the views and stop at every chapel and viewpoint.
