Mystras and Monemvasia: A Visitor's Guide to Byzantine Laconia

In the south-east Peloponnese, Laconia hides two of the most beautiful places in Greece: Mystras, the ruined Byzantine city on a hill above Sparta, and Monemvasia, a medieval town built on a rock in the sea. Together they make a perfect two- or three-day trip from Athens.

Mystras: the last capital of Byzantium

A few kilometres from modern Sparta, Mystras climbs a steep hill of the Taygetos range, crowned by a castle. From the 14th century it was the capital of the Despotate of the Morea and one of the great centres of late Byzantine art and learning – the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos, was crowned here. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Churches and monasteries with frescoes, such as the Pantanassa and the Peribleptos.
  • The Palace of the Despots and the lanes of the lower and upper town.
  • The castle at the top, with views over the Evrotas valley.

Tip: the site is on a steep slope. Start from the upper entrance and walk down – your driver can wait for you at the lower gate. Bring water and good shoes, and avoid midday in summer.

Monemvasia: the town on the rock

Monemvasia sits on a huge rock joined to the mainland by a short causeway – its name means “single entrance”. Inside the walls, the lower town is a maze of stone lanes, churches and small hotels where cars cannot enter. A path climbs to the upper town and the church of Agia Sofia, on the edge of the cliff.

  • Walk the walls of the lower town at sunset.
  • Climb to Agia Sofia for the view over the sea.
  • Taste the local Malvasia, the wine named after the town.
  • Stay a night inside the walls – the town is magical when the day visitors leave.

How many days?

One day is enough for Mystras and Sparta; Monemvasia deserves at least one night. A relaxed plan is two nights: Mystras on the way down, Monemvasia the next day, and back to Athens or on to Elafonisos, Gythio and the Mani.

Getting there

Sparta is about 3 hours from Athens and Monemvasia about 4 hours. Public buses run to Sparta, with fewer connections on to Mystras and Monemvasia, so a private transfer is the easiest way to see both without losing half a day on connections.

Frequently asked questions

Can we see Mystras and Monemvasia in one day from Athens?

It is possible, but it means about 7 hours on the road. We recommend at least one night, ideally in Monemvasia.

Is Mystras suitable for children and older visitors?

Yes, with care: the paths are steep and uneven. Start at the upper entrance and walk down, and take breaks in the shade.

Can we drive into Monemvasia?

No – cars stay outside the walls of the lower town, and you walk in through the gate. Your driver drops you as close as possible.
