15 August & Summer Festivals 2027 in the Peloponnese

In Greece, 15 August – the Dormition of the Virgin Mary – is called the “Easter of summer”. Families return to their home villages, every church dedicated to the Panagia holds its feast, and squares fill with music, dancing and long tables under the plane trees. Around it, the Peloponnese has its summer festivals: ancient drama at Epidaurus, music and theatre in Argos and Mycenae, and dance in Kalamata. Here is what to see in summer 2027, with the partner hotels we book for our guests.

Key dates summer 2027

  • July – Kalamata International Dance Festival (2027 dates to be announced; in 2026 it ran 17–26 July).
  • June to August – Festival of Argos–Mycenae: theatre, concerts and dance at the ancient theatre of Argos, Mycenae and Nafplio.
  • Weekends in July and August – Epidaurus Festival, ancient drama in the ancient theatre.
  • Sunday 15 August 2027 – Dormition of the Virgin Mary, public holiday and village feasts (panigyria) everywhere.
  • 23 August – feast at the monastery of Panagia Malevi on Mount Parnon.

1. What is a panigyri?

A panigyri is a village feast for the name day of its church. It starts with the evening service and a procession of the icon, then moves to the square: grilled meat and local wine, a live band with clarinet and violin, and circle dances that go on long after midnight. Visitors are always welcome – just join the table and the dance. Most feasts in the mountain villages of Arcadia are in July and August, when the villages are full again.

2. Panagia Malevi on Mount Parnon

The monastery of Panagia Malevi stands at about 900 m on the slopes of Mount Parnon, 5 km from the village of Agios Petros and 20 km from Astros. It is dedicated to the Dormition, and its venerated icon draws pilgrims from all over Greece, above all for the feast on 23 August. Combine it with our hike around Agios Petros and a swim on the Arcadian coast below.

Where to stay: Xenonas Ouranogeiton in Kosmas on Mount Parnon, or by the sea in Paralio Astros – Astros Beach Hotel, Anigraia or Blue Horizon Suites.

3. The Arcadian coast: Astros, Tyros and Leonidio

August is high season on the coast, with village feasts, fish tavernas by the water and warm, calm sea. Tyros and Leonidio keep their Tsakonian character, and Paralio Astros has the longest sandy beach. Book early – the small villa complexes fill up first.
