Greek Cruise Ports: What to See from Katakolo, Nafplio, Kalamata and Itea
Many Mediterranean cruises call at small ports in the Peloponnese and Central Greece that sit right next to some of the most famous ancient sites in the world. A day in port is short, so it pays to know what is within reach, how long it takes and how to be back on board in good time. Here is our local guide to the four ports we know best.
Katakolo – for Ancient Olympia
Katakolo is a small harbour town on the west coast of the Peloponnese. Its great draw is Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, only about 35 km away – around 40 minutes by car. In a few hours you can walk the sanctuary with the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame is lit, the Philippeion and the stone tunnel into the ancient stadium, and visit the Archaeological Museum with the Hermes of Praxiteles.
Time needed: about 5 hours port to port. See our Katakolo shore excursion to Ancient Olympia and the Ancient Olympia visitor guide.
Nafplio – for Mycenae, Epidaurus and the old town
Ships anchor in the bay of Nafplio and passengers come ashore by tender. Nafplio itself – the first capital of modern Greece, with its old town, the Bourtzi castle in the bay and the Palamidi fortress above – is worth a visit on its own. Within easy reach are Mycenae, the kingdom of Agamemnon with the Lion Gate and the Cyclopean walls, about 25 km away, and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, famous for its acoustics, about 30 km away.
Time needed: about 6–7 hours for all three; choose just one site if your day is short. See our Nafplio shore excursion.
Kalamata – for Ancient Messene or Mystras
Kalamata lies at the head of the Messinian Gulf below the Taygetos mountains. About 30 km away, Ancient Messene is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Greece, with its theatre, agora, Asclepieion, stadium and city walls in a green valley below Mount Ithome. Alternatively, cross the mountains (about an hour and a quarter) to Mystras, the Byzantine city of churches and palaces near Sparta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Time needed: about 5–6 hours. See our Kalamata shore excursion.
Itea – for Delphi
Itea is a small port on the Gulf of Corinth. From the tender pier, the road climbs through the olive grove of Amfissa to Delphi – about 17 km, around 25 minutes each way. Visit the sanctuary of Apollo, the theatre and the stadium on the slopes of Parnassus, and the museum with the Charioteer.
Time needed: half a day. See our Itea port to Delphi transfer.

Tips for a stress-free day in port
- Check your times: note the ship’s arrival, the first tender and the all-aboard time – not the departure time.
- Keep a margin: plan to be back at the pier at least 30–45 minutes before all-aboard.
- Tender ports take longer: in Nafplio and Itea the first boats ashore can be busy, so allow extra time.
- Entrance tickets: archaeological sites have their own tickets and opening hours; bring a hat, water and good shoes.
- Private or ship excursion? A private excursion means your own driver, your own pace and no waiting for a full coach; a licensed guide can be added on request.
