Where to Stay in the Mani
The Mani is the wild middle finger of the Peloponnese: stone tower villages, bare mountains dropping into a clear sea, the Diros caves and the road to Cape Tainaro, the southern tip of mainland Greece. It is a big area with slow roads, so where you stay shapes your whole trip. Here is how to choose a base, and the partner hotels we book for our guests.
Areopoli, Kardamyli or East Mani? Choosing your base
- Areopoli and Limeni – the heart of the Mani. Stone lanes and tower houses in Areopoli, the turquoise bay of Limeni just below, and short drives to the Diros caves and the deep Mani. The best all-round base.
- Kardamyli (Outer Mani) – on the Messinian Gulf, greener and softer, with walking trails into the Taygetos foothills and the Viros gorge. Closest to Kalamata airport.
- East Mani near Gytheio – quiet villages on the Laconian Gulf, sea views and easy access to Gytheio. Good for families and longer stays.

Areopoli is about 295 km from Athens – roughly 3 hours 40 minutes by car – and public transport is slow, so the easiest way is a private transfer from Athens to Areopoli and the Diros caves. Flying into Kalamata is closer: our transfers go from Kalamata airport to Kardamyli (about 1 hour), to Stoupa and to Areopoli (about 1 hour 55 minutes). For East Mani, see our transfer from Athens airport to Gythio. All routes are listed on our all transfers page.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to stay in the Mani?
Areopoli and Limeni are the best all-round base: central, close to the Diros caves and within easy reach of the tower villages and Cape Tainaro. Choose Kardamyli in the Outer Mani for hiking and a gentler pace, or East Mani near Gytheio for quiet and sea views.

Areopoli is about 295 km from Athens, roughly 3 hours 40 minutes by car. From Kalamata airport it is about 1 hour to Kardamyli and about 1 hour 55 minutes to Areopoli. We arrange private transfers on all these routes.
