About this Tour
Arriving on a cruise ship in Gythio? The small port of Laconia is the start of two of the best day trips in the southern Peloponnese: the Byzantine city of Mystras, about 45 km away (around 45 minutes by car), or the Diros caves and the tower village of Areopoli, about 35 km away (around 40 minutes). On this private shore excursion your driver waits for you at the pier and brings you back in good time for all-aboard, away from the crowds of the ship’s coaches.
Option 1: Mystras
Drive north through the olive groves of Laconia to Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a whole Byzantine town of churches, monasteries and palaces on a hillside under Taygetos. Your driver drops you at the upper gate so you can walk downhill past the Pantanassa monastery and the Metropolis, and picks you up at the lower gate.
Option 2: Diros caves and Areopoli
Drive west across the Mani to the Diros caves, where a small boat takes you along underground lakes among stalactites and stalagmites. Continue to Areopoli, the stone-built capital of the Mani, and stop at the little harbour of Limeni for a coffee or lunch by the sea before returning to Gythio.
