Messinia: Castles, Beaches and Ancient Messene – A Travel Guide
Messinia is the south-west corner of the Peloponnese: olive groves down to the sea, Venetian castles on the capes, long sandy beaches on the Ionian coast and one of the best ancient sites in Greece. With its own airport at Kalamata, it is also one of the easiest parts of the Peloponnese to reach.
Kalamata
The capital of Messinia is a lively seaside city with a long beach, a small castle above the old town and a busy market where you can try the famous Kalamata olives, figs and honey. It is a good first or last night, close to the airport.
Ancient Messene
About 30 km north-west of Kalamata, Ancient Messene is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient cities in Greece. Founded in 369 BC, it has a theatre, a stadium surrounded by columns, temples and kilometres of city walls with towers and gates – and far fewer visitors than Olympia or Mycenae. Plan two to three hours, and go early in summer.
Pylos, Navarino Bay and Voidokilia
Pylos is a pretty harbour town on the huge bay of Navarino, where the naval battle of 1827 helped decide Greek independence. North of the bay are the Gialova lagoon, a good place for bird watching, and Voidokilia, the famous horseshoe-shaped beach under the old castle of Navarino. Near Chora you can visit the Palace of Nestor, the best-preserved Mycenaean palace in Greece.
Methoni, Koroni and Finikounda
The southern tip of Messinia has two of the finest Venetian castles of Greece: Methoni, with its sea tower on a small islet, and Koroni, a castle with a village and a monastery inside its walls. Between them, Finikounda is a relaxed fishing village with sandy beaches and tavernas on the harbour.
The west coast: Marathopoli and Kyparissia
North of Pylos the Ionian coast is quiet and open, with long beaches and big sunsets. Marathopoli faces the small island of Proti, and Kyparissia has an old upper town under its castle and a long beach where loggerhead turtles nest in summer.
Waterfalls and gorges
Inland, Messinia is green and full of water. The Polylimnio waterfalls near Kalamata are a series of pools in a small gorge, and the Neda gorge, on the border with Ilia, is one of the most beautiful river walks in Greece.
Outer Mani
South-east of Kalamata the road follows the coast under the Taygetos mountains to Kardamyli and Stoupa, the start of the Mani. See our Mani peninsula guide.
When to go
April to June and September to October are ideal: warm days, green hills and a warm sea. July and August are hot and the beaches are busier. In late summer Pylos hosts the Navarinia festival, and in autumn and early winter you can see the olive harvest.

Getting there
Kalamata Airport has flights from Athens and, in summer, from many European cities. From Athens, Kalamata is about 3 hours by motorway. Buses between the villages are rare, so a private driver is the easiest way to move between beaches, castles and ancient sites.
